Kolkata (Calcutta) is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, on the Hooghly River. It grew from villages where the English East India Company set up a trading settlement in 1690, was the capital of British India until 1911 and was the centre of the Bengal Renaissance. It remains one of India's largest cities and a major port and cultural centre.
