Kollam

Also known as Quilon

Kollam, formerly Quilon, is a port city on the Malabar Coast of Kerala, India. It was a major centre of the medieval spice trade with Arabia and China, described by Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta, and the Malayalam calendar, the Kollam era, begins in 825 CE. The Tharisapalli copper plates of 849 granted privileges to its Syrian Christian church, and it later became a seat of the rulers of Venad.
