Marthanda Varma
Marthanda Varma was ruler of Venad from 1729 who built it into the kingdom of Travancore at the southern tip of India. He crushed the power of local nobles, annexed neighbouring chiefdoms such as Kayamkulam, and defeated the Dutch East India Company at Colachel in 1741. In 1750 he dedicated his kingdom to the god Padmanabha of Thiruvananthapuram, ruling thereafter as the deity's servant.
