Malabar Coast

The Malabar Coast is the south-western coast of India, in present-day Kerala and neighbouring areas, long famous for its pepper and spice trade. Vasco da Gama reached Calicut on this coast in 1498, opening the sea route from Europe to India. The coast became the first focus of the Portuguese Empire's commercial and military efforts in Asia.
