British India

British India refers to the territories of the Indian subcontinent ruled directly by Britain, first through the East India Company and from 1858 by the crown. It expanded by conquest and annexation, absorbing the Sikh Empire after the Anglo-Sikh wars of the 1840s. Its northwestern frontier was the focus of rivalry with the Russian Empire in Central Asia, known as the Great Game.
