Chinsurah
Chinsurah is a town on the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India, about 35 kilometres north of Kolkata. From the 17th century it was the main base of the Dutch East India Company in Bengal, trading in textiles, silk, saltpetre and opium. A British victory there in 1759 ended Dutch ambitions in the region, and the town passed to Britain under the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824.
