Mir Jafar

c. 1691–1765 · 18th century

Mir Jafar was the commander of the army of Siraj ud-Daulah, Nawab of Bengal, who secretly allied with the British East India Company and held back his troops at the Battle of Plassey in 1757. Installed by Robert Clive as nawab, he depended on the Company, which replaced him in 1760 with his son-in-law Mir Qasim and restored him in 1763. His name became a byword for treachery in South Asia.
