Parliament passes the Stamp Act
The act taxed printed papers in the American colonies, from newspapers to playing cards. Colonists protested 'no taxation without representation', and Parliament repealed it the next year.
Parliament passes the Quartering Act
The act required American colonies to provide barracks and supplies for British troops. Resentment of it was later listed among the grievances in the Declaration of Independence.
HMS Victory is launched at Chatham
The 100-gun first-rate HMS Victory was floated out of dry dock at Chatham. Forty years later she was Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, and she survives at Portsmouth as the oldest commissioned warship.
