Rebellion of the Barrios
The Rebellion of the Barrios was an uprising of the neighbourhoods of Quito in 1765 against new Bourbon taxes, especially a royal monopoly on cane liquor and stricter collection of the sales tax. Crowds drove out the authorities and the city governed itself for months before royal troops restored control in 1766.
