Stamp Act 1765

1765 · 18th century

The Stamp Act of 1765 was a British law requiring printed materials in the American colonies, such as legal documents, newspapers and playing cards, to carry a tax stamp. It was the first direct tax imposed by Parliament on the colonies and provoked riots, boycotts and the Stamp Act Congress, under the slogan of no taxation without representation. Parliament repealed it in 1766 but passed the Declaratory Act asserting its authority.
