Stamford, Lincolnshire
Stamford is a market town in southern Lincolnshire, England, on the River Welland. In the Viking Age it was one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw, submitting to Edward the Elder in 918. In the Middle Ages it prospered from the wool and cloth trade and had many churches and religious houses, and its stone buildings survive largely intact. Burghley House, home of the Cecil family, stands just outside it.
