Petrobey Mavromichalis

1765–1848 · 19th century · Also known as Petrobey, Petros Mavromichalis

Petros Mavromichalis, known as Petrobey, was the last bey of the Mani peninsula under Ottoman suzerainty. In March 1821 he raised the Maniots at the start of the Greek War of Independence and led the Messenian Senate at Kalamata. He later opposed Ioannis Kapodistrias, whose imprisonment of him led his kinsmen to assassinate the governor in 1831.
