Demetrios Ypsilantis

1793–1832 · 19th century

Demetrios Ypsilantis was a Greek army officer of the War of Independence from a Phanariot family; his brother Alexandros led the rising of 1821 in the Danubian Principalities. Arriving in the Peloponnese in June 1821 as his brother's representative, he claimed the national leadership and clashed with the local notables. He took part in the capture of Tripolitsa, defended Argos in 1822 and in 1829 commanded the Greek army in the war's last battle, at Petra.
