Ioannis Kapodistrias

1776–1831 · 19th century · Also known as John Capodistria

Ioannis Kapodistrias was a Corfiot nobleman who served as a secretary of state of the Septinsular Republic and then as a Russian diplomat and joint foreign minister of Russia from 1816 to 1822. Elected first governor of Greece in 1827, he arrived in 1828 and built a central administration, schools and a currency, the phoenix. His authoritarian rule provoked opposition, and he was assassinated in Nafplio in 1831 by members of the Mavromichalis family.
