Ioannina
Ioannina is the largest city of Epirus in north-western Greece, on the shore of Lake Pamvotis. A leading city of the medieval Despotate of Epirus, it surrendered to the Ottomans in 1430. Around 1800 it was the capital of Ali Pasha of Tepelena, who ruled much of mainland Greece from its citadel. It became part of Greece in 1913.
