Eli Whitney

1765–1825 · 19th century

Eli Whitney was an American inventor who patented the cotton gin in 1794, a machine that separated cotton fibres from their seeds far faster than by hand. It made short-staple cotton profitable across the American South and fuelled the expansion of cotton plantations and of slavery; he also promoted interchangeable parts in the manufacture of muskets.
