Great Depression

1929–1939 · 20th century

The Great Depression was the worldwide economic slump that followed the Wall Street Crash of October 1929 and lasted through much of the 1930s. World trade and commodity prices collapsed, causing mass unemployment and bank failures. Export economies such as Chile, dependent on nitrate and copper, were among the hardest hit, and the crisis destabilised governments across Europe and Latin America, including Greece and Chile.
