Battle of the Olive Grove of Koundouros

1205 · 13th century

The Battle of the Olive Grove of Koundouros was fought in Messenia in the south-western Peloponnese in 1205. A small force of crusaders under William of Champlitte and Geoffrey of Villehardouin, put at a few hundred knights and men by the Chronicle of the Morea, defeated a much larger army of local Greeks. The victory opened the way for the conquest of the western Peloponnese and the founding of the Principality of Achaea.
