Karytaina

Karytaina is a village in Arcadia in the central Peloponnese, dominated by a castle on a crag above the Alpheios river. It was the seat of a barony of the Principality of Achaea, and its castle was built around 1254 by Geoffrey of Bruyères, hero of the Chronicle of the Morea. The Byzantines took it in 1320, and in the Greek War of Independence it served as a stronghold of Theodoros Kolokotronis.
