Karyes
Karyes is the administrative centre of the monastic state of Mount Athos in northern Greece. It is the seat of the Holy Community, the council of representatives of the twenty ruling monasteries, and of its executive, as well as of a civil governor appointed by the Greek state. Its Protaton church, dating from the 10th century, holds wall paintings by the painter Manuel Panselinos from around 1300.
