Athanasios the Athonite

c. 920–c. 1003 · 10th century · Also known as Athanasius the Athonite

Athanasios the Athonite was a Byzantine monk who founded the Great Lavra on Mount Athos in 963 with the support of his friend Nikephoros Phokas, later emperor. It was the first large organised monastery on the peninsula, and his rules shaped Athonite monasticism. He is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox Church.
