Athanasius of Alexandria

Also known as Saint Athanasius

Athanasius of Alexandria was patriarch of Alexandria in the fourth century and a leading defender of Nicene Christianity. He consecrated Frumentius as the first bishop of Aksum. This established the link between the Ethiopian church and the Church of Alexandria, a significant aspect of religious governance in the Aksumite Empire.
