Fourth Crusade

1204 · 13th century · Part of the Crusades

The Fourth Crusade was a Western expedition that, instead of reaching the Holy Land, sacked Constantinople in 1204. The crusaders established a Latin Empire, and although the Byzantines recovered the city in 1261, the Byzantine Empire never regained its former strength.
