Battle of Pelagonia

1259 · 13th century

The Battle of Pelagonia was fought in 1259 in the Pelagonia plain of Macedonia between the Empire of Nicaea and an alliance of the Despotate of Epirus, the Principality of Achaea and the Kingdom of Sicily. The alliance broke apart before the fighting, and Nicaean forces under John Palaiologos defeated the Latins and captured Prince William II of Villehardouin. The victory opened the way for the Nicaean recovery of Constantinople in 1261.
