William II of Villehardouin

d. 1278 · 13th century

William II of Villehardouin was Prince of Achaea in the Frankish Morea from 1246 to 1278. He completed the conquest of the Peloponnese with the fall of Monemvasia in 1248 and built castles such as Mistras and Grand Magne. Captured by the Byzantines at the Battle of Pelagonia in 1259, he gained his release by ceding Mistras, Monemvasia and Grand Magne, the base of the later Despotate of the Morea.
