Despotate of the Morea

1349–1460 · 14th century

The Despotate of the Morea was a Byzantine province in the Peloponnese, ruled from Mistras by members of the imperial family with the title of despot. Growing from the fortresses ceded by the Franks in 1262, it reconquered most of the peninsula from the Principality of Achaea by 1430, was a centre of late Byzantine learning, and fell to the Ottomans in 1460.
