Benedict XIV
Benedict XIV, born Prospero Lambertini in Bologna, was pope from 1740 to 1758 and one of the most learned popes of the 18th century. A noted canon lawyer, he reformed the procedure of canonisation, encouraged scholarship and science and kept good relations with European rulers. In 1751 he suppressed the ancient Patriarchate of Aquileia, dividing its territory between the new archdioceses of Udine and Gorizia.
