Bernard I, Duke of Saxony

d. 1011 · 11th century

Bernard I was Duke of Saxony from 973 to 1011, the son of Hermann Billung. He continued his father's role as guardian of the Billung march against the Slavic peoples east of the Elbe, though the great Slavic revolt of 983 undermined German control there. He strengthened the ducal power of the Billung family in Saxony.
