Bleiburg repatriations
The Bleiburg repatriations took place in May 1945, when British forces in southern Austria refused the surrender of retreating soldiers of the Independent State of Croatia and accompanying civilians near the town of Bleiburg and handed them over to Yugoslav Partisans. Many tens of thousands were killed in mass executions or died on forced marches. The events remain a sensitive subject in Croatian memory.
