Yugoslav Partisans

1941–1945 · 20th century

The Yugoslav Partisans were the Communist-led resistance movement in occupied Yugoslavia during the Second World War, commanded by Josip Broz Tito. They rose in July 1941, briefly holding the Republic of Užice in western Serbia and much of Montenegro, and fought the Axis armies, the Ustaše and the royalist Chetniks. By 1945 they had liberated most of the country and formed the core of socialist Yugoslavia.
