Government of National Salvation

1941 CE – 1944 CE · capital Belgrade

Collaborationist Serbian government of General Milan Nedić, which administered German-occupied Serbia during the Second World War.

Origins

After the Axis conquest of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in April 1941, a reduced Serbia was placed under a German military commander. A commissioner government led by Milan Aćimović proved unable to cope with the uprising of summer 1941, and on 29 August 1941 the Germans installed the former war minister General Milan Nedić at the head of a Government of National Salvation.

Rule and society

The government ran the civil administration, police and a Serbian State Guard, but the German occupiers held real power and carried out mass reprisals, such as the Kragujevac massacre of October 1941. Jews of Serbia were murdered in 1941 and 1942, with the help of local police. Nedić promoted a conservative peasant ideology and sheltered refugees from the Independent State of Croatia.

Decline and legacy

As Partisans and the Soviet Red Army advanced, Nedić fled in October 1944 and Belgrade was liberated. He died in Yugoslav custody in 1946. The regime's record of collaboration remains debated in Serbia.
