British Nationality and New Zealand Citizenship Act 1948

1948 · 20th century

The British Nationality and New Zealand Citizenship Act 1948 created a separate New Zealand citizenship for the first time, taking effect on 1 January 1949. New Zealand citizens remained British subjects, in line with the arrangements agreed among Commonwealth countries after Canada's citizenship law of 1946. It was replaced by the Citizenship Act 1977.
