Burgred of Mercia

r. 852–874 · 9th century

Burgred was king of Mercia from 852 to 874. He allied with Wessex, which helped him against the Welsh, and in 853 married Æthelswith, sister of Alfred the Great. When the Great Heathen Army occupied Repton in 873–874 he was driven into exile and went to Rome, where he died and was buried in the church of the English quarter.
