Burgraviate of Nuremberg

Also known as Burgrave of Nuremberg

The Burgraviate of Nuremberg was the office and territory of the burgraves who commanded the imperial castle of Nuremberg for the Holy Roman Emperor. From about 1192 it was held by the Hohenzollerns, who built up lands in Franconia around Ansbach and Bayreuth. Burgrave Frederick VI became elector of Brandenburg in 1415, and in 1427 the family sold its castle at Nuremberg to the city.
