House of Hohenzollern
The House of Hohenzollern is a German dynasty named after its castle near Hechingen in Swabia. Its Franconian line, descended from Frederick of Zollern, burgrave of Nuremberg from 1192, gained Brandenburg in 1415 and later ruled Prussia and, from 1871 to 1918, the German Empire. A Swabian line kept the principalities of Hohenzollern, and from its Sigmaringen branch came the kings of Romania.
