Burgos is a city in northern Spain, capital of the province of Burgos in Castile and León. Founded in 884 as a frontier fortress by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, it became the capital of the County of Castile and long the chief city of the Kingdom of Castile, prospering on the wool trade and the pilgrim road to Santiago. Its Gothic cathedral is a World Heritage Site, and in 1936 it was the seat of Franco's rebel government.
