Turmodigi

300 BCE – 29 BCE (approx.) · capital Segisamo

A people of the upper Arlanzón in Burgos, whose town Segisamo served as Augustus' base in the Cantabrian Wars.

Origins

The Turmodigi, or Murbogi, lived around the upper Arlanzón and Pisuerga in modern Burgos province from the later Iron Age, between the Vaccaei, Autrigones and Cantabri. Their language was probably Celtic.

Rule and society

Little is known of their society. Their main settlement was Segisamo, modern Sasamón, and they farmed the northern Meseta and herded in its uplands.

Decline and legacy

In 26 BCE Augustus made Segisamo his camp for the campaign against the Cantabri, and the Turmodigi were integrated into Hispania Tarraconensis. Segisamo continued as a Roman town.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
