County of Castile
Origins
Castile, 'land of castles', began in the 9th century as a frontier district of the Kingdom of Asturias in the upper Ebro and Burgos region. Its first known count, Rodrigo, governed from around 850, and his son Diego Rodríguez Porcelos founded Burgos in 884. Several local counts governed until the territory was united.
Rule and society
Count Fernán González, from about 931 to 970, gathered the Castilian counties and made his office hereditary, largely independent of León. Castile was a society of free peasant-soldiers and frontier towns, with its own customary law and a Romance dialect that became Castilian. Sancho García granted fueros to frontier settlers, and the counts fought Almanzor and his successors.
Decline and legacy
The murder of the young Count García Sánchez in 1029 brought Castile under Sancho III of Navarre, whose son Ferdinand I ruled it and became king of León in 1037. From 1065 Castile was a kingdom in its own right under Sancho II.
