Fernán González of Castile

c. 910–970 · 10th century

Fernán González was Count of Castile from about 931 to 970. He united the counties of Castile, Álava and Lantarón under his rule and made Castile largely autonomous from the kings of León. He fought the Caliphate of Córdoba, took part in León's succession disputes and made the countship hereditary. Later epic poetry made him a Castilian hero.
