County of Monzón

943 CE – 1028 CE (approx.) · capital Monzón de Campos

A Leonese frontier county on the Tierra de Campos, created for the Ansúrez family as a counterweight to Castile.

Origins

Around 943 Ramiro II of León created the County of Monzón, around Monzón de Campos near Palencia, for Assur Fernández, a rival of Fernán González of Castile. It was part of the king's effort to check the growing independence of Castile.

Rule and society

The Ansúrez counts governed a fertile plain of the Tierra de Campos, newly resettled by farmers, from the castle of Monzón. They were among the leading nobles of the Kingdom of León, involved in its civil wars and frontier fighting against the Caliphate of Córdoba.

Decline and legacy

After Fernando Ansúrez, the county passed by marriage and conflict into the hands of other families and was absorbed into the domains of the kings of León and Castile by the early 11th century. The Ansúrez family later produced Pedro Ansúrez, the lord who developed Valladolid.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
