Ramiro II of León

c. 898–951 · 10th century

Ramiro II was king of León from 931 to 951. In 939 he defeated the caliph Abd al-Rahman III at the Battle of Simancas, one of the greatest Christian victories of the Reconquista, and pushed the frontier south to the Tormes. He also contended with the ambitions of Fernán González, count of Castile, who gradually made his county independent.
