Berbers
The Berbers, or Amazigh, are the indigenous peoples of North Africa, living across the Maghreb and the Sahara. Berber groups formed the core of several empires, including the Almoravid Empire, founded by Saharan Sanhaja tribes, and the Almohad Caliphate, rooted among the Masmuda of the Atlas. They also played major roles in the armies of the Fatimid Caliphate and the Umayyad Caliphate, in trans-Saharan trade with the Ghana Empire, and in the hinterland of Carthage.
