Almoravid Empire
The Almoravid Empire was a Berber Muslim empire that arose from a religious reform movement among the Sanhaja of the western Sahara in the eleventh century. Under leaders such as Yusuf ibn Tashfin it conquered Morocco, founded Marrakesh, and intervened in al-Andalus after 1086. It promoted Maliki Islam and controlled trans-Saharan trade, influencing the Ghana Empire, before it was overthrown by the Almohads in 1147.
