Almoravid capture of Awdaghast

1054 · 11th century

The Almoravid capture of Awdaghast was the seizure of the Saharan trading town of Awdaghast by the Almoravids in 1054. Awdaghast was an important commercial centre linked to the Ghana Empire's control of the trans-Saharan gold trade. Its fall weakened Ghana's grip on trade routes and marked an early stage of Almoravid pressure on Ghana.
