al-Andalus

Al-Andalus was the name given to the parts of the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule from 711 until 1492. It was conquered under the Umayyad Caliphate and later ruled by an independent Umayyad dynasty at Córdoba, outside Abbasid control. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries the Almoravid Empire and then the Almohad Caliphate intervened from North Africa to rule it and defend it against the Christian kingdoms.
