County of Girona

785 CE – 897 CE (approx.) · capital Girona

One of the first Frankish counties south of the Pyrenees, created when Girona surrendered to Charlemagne in 785.

Origins

In 785 the people of Girona handed their city to Charlemagne's forces, and a county was set up under Frankish rule as part of the frontier that became the Marca Hispanica. Its first known count was Rostany.

Rule and society

Counts appointed by the Carolingian kings governed Girona alongside its bishop, defending the frontier against al-Andalus. The county included the plain around the city and controlled the road from Gaul to Barcelona. It was often held together with Barcelona, and its counts were frequently Goths of local or Septimanian origin.

Decline and legacy

From 878 Girona was held by Wilfred the Hairy with Barcelona and Osona. After his death in 897 it passed with Barcelona to his heirs and remained permanently part of the domains of the counts of Barcelona.
