County of Osona

798 CE – 1111 CE (approx.) · capital Vic

The Catalan county of the plain of Vic, resettled by Wilfred the Hairy, where the monasteries of Ripoll and Vic grew into centres of learning.

Origins

Osona, named after the ancient Ausetani, came under Frankish rule around 798. After the revolt of Aissó in 826 it was largely abandoned. From about 879 Wilfred the Hairy repopulated the plain of Vic, restored its bishopric in 886 and founded the monasteries of Ripoll and Sant Joan de les Abadesses.

Rule and society

Osona was a frontier county facing al-Andalus, settled by free peasant colonists who cleared land and built castles. It was usually held by the counts of Barcelona rather than having its own line. Its church centres flourished: Ripoll's library made it a hub of learning in the 10th century, where Gerbert of Aurillac studied Arabic science.

Decline and legacy

Osona remained in the hands of the House of Barcelona, briefly granted to younger sons, until it was fully merged with the County of Barcelona. It became part of Catalonia and the Crown of Aragon, and Vic remains its centre.
