County of Urgell

798 CE – 1413 CE (approx.) · capital Balaguer

The longest-lasting Catalan county, ruled by the Ermengol counts from Balaguer, whose bishops became co-princes of Andorra.

Origins

Urgell, in the upper Segre valley, was taken by the Franks around 798 and organised as a county of the Marca Hispanica, often joined with Cerdanya. Wilfred the Hairy ruled it from 870. In 992 it passed to Ermengol I, son of Borrell II of Barcelona, founding a dynasty that lasted over two centuries.

Rule and society

The counts of Urgell, nearly all named Ermengol, pushed south against al-Andalus and conquered Balaguer in 1105, making it their capital. The bishops of La Seu d'Urgell held great influence, and an agreement of 1278 with the counts of Foix made them co-lords of Andorra. Later the county passed to a branch of the royal House of Barcelona.

Decline and legacy

Count James II claimed the throne of Aragon in 1410, but the Compromise of Caspe of 1412 chose Ferdinand of Antequera. James rebelled, was besieged in Balaguer in 1413 and imprisoned, and the county was confiscated. The bishop of Urgell remains co-prince of Andorra.
