Borrell II of Barcelona

927–992 · 10th century · Also known as Borrell II

Borrell II was Count of Barcelona, Girona and Osona from 947 and Count of Urgell from 948. He sought ties with the Caliphate of Córdoba and the papacy. After Almanzor sacked Barcelona in 985 and the Frankish king sent no help, he stopped renewing homage to the Frankish crown, a step later seen as the start of Catalan independence.
