Santiago de Compostela
Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia in north-western Spain. It grew around the shrine where the remains of the apostle Saint James were believed to have been found in the ninth century, and its cathedral became one of the three great pilgrimage goals of medieval Christendom. The routes leading to it, the Way of Saint James, carried pilgrims, settlers and trade across France and northern Spain.
